Out-of-date satellites could leave motorists in the lurch, a address by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) warns.

It’s admonishing of a GPS meltdown, as the backup of in-orbit units is months abaft schedule, and millions of dollars over budget.

The GAO said “It is ambiguous whether the Air Force will be able to access newsatellites in time to advance accepted GPS account after interruption.”

The address goes on to criticise the amount and adjournment of the new satellites, and advises that “If the Air Force does not accommodated its agenda goals for development ofGPS satellites, there will be an added likelihood that in2010, as old satellites activate to fail, the all-embracing GPS constellationwill abatement beneath the amount of satellites appropriate to accommodate the levelof GPS account that the U.S. government commits to. Such a gap disability could accept absolute impacts on all GPS users”

Sat-navs and added GPS accessories use satellites to account a motorist’s position, generally triangulating the area application 3 or added aggressive or noncombatant satellites to do so. Most satellites accept an boilerplate activity assumption of 8 years, but some ‘geostationary’ satellites can endure up to 15 years.
