Bob Lutz came in seventh, but he won.
Motor Authority explains, “Last month, during a altercation with journalists about Accepted Motors’ new ‘May the Best Car Win’ business campaign,” Accepted Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz “laid down the claiming to any announcer to a bound with the Cadillac CTS-V to see if any commensurable car could topple the Caddy.” The claiming was after continued to the accepted public, and yesterday, seven drivers (three of them journalists) called from a basin of added than 100 applicants showed up in their action sedans to claiming Lutz at New York’s Monticello Motor Club.
The 77-year old Lutz wasn’t the alone GM disciplinarian at the event, and several of the challengers (including New York Times auto analyst Lawrence Ulrich) showed up in their own CTS-Vs. In fact, six of the seven fastest laps were completed in the Cadillac. A BMW M3 snuck into the list, in fourth place. The all-embracing champ for the day was GM Performance Division chief, John Heinricy, announcement the fastest lap in the CTS-V — which he helped to design.

Lutz placed seventh, but apparently got what he wanted. After all, in his latest position at the company, Lutz directs GM’s business efforts. The event, Forbes notes, amounted to “inexpensive and accordant marketing” for the 556-horspower CTS-V…and an angel addition for Accepted Motors.
The amateur with the loudest pre-race boasts, however, got abominably beaten. The New York Times letters that the automotive blog Jalopnik “was, by far, the a lot of articulate competitor. Initially, the Web website proposed application a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG in the V-Series Challenge. It again fabricated an adjustment with Jaguar to use an XFR.” Jaguar, however, pulled that car out of the race. Instead, Jalopnik’s biographer showed up in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, acquisitive its all-wheel-drive and ablaze weight would abate the Cadillac’s massive ability advantage over the Lancer’s four-cylinder engine.
It didn’t work. Jalopnik’s best time, the blog notes, was just 3:08 – acceptable for ninth abode out of twelve drivers, endure abode a part of automotive journalists and able-bodied abaft six of seven Cadillacs antagonism that day.
